Ask The Corp: How to Protect Your Child Against Child Abusers
We at The Corp strongly believe in the safety of our nation’s children. Yet more and more each year, we hear startling information about a growing number of child abuse cases.
So, today, we at the corp want to focus on a very important issue that effects parents all over the world. In our opinion is something that does not get addressed enough. Today we are going to talk about the issue of child abuse. Here is a post that one of our readers left for us:
Corp:
I have 2 kids ages three and five. My wife and I both work full time, and, in order to keep our marriage going strong, we have a date night twice a month, where we go out to eat and see a movie.
Since we started doing this over a year ago, we have had a really nice babysitter watching our child. The kids seem to like her a lot and she has always stricken us as an extremely nice young lady.
A few days ago, however, a day after our date night, my wife noticed a bruise on our three year olds left thigh. We asked our 5 year old if she knew how our daughter might have gotten the bruise. She just shrugged her shoulders and went on her way.
We don’t want to suspect anyone of abuse, but our children come first. Do you think we should do something about this, and, if so, what should we do?
Signed Mr. Anonymous (He wanted us to keep his name out of the post.)
Well Mr Anonymous, We here at Project Security Corp would be more than happy to answer your question…
Child Abuse is one of the most widespread and violent forms of assault around. What’s even scarier is that most forms of child abuse come from a family member or a caregiver. In case you want to know how serious the issue of child abuse truly is here are few startling statistics for you.
- Approximately 80% of child abuse is perpetrated by a parent or caregiver.
<>
-1,500 children die from abuse each year. There are 140,000 injuries to children from abuse each year. There are 1.7 million reports of child abuse each year.
<>
-The majority of children in residential care have been victims of significant physical or sexual abuse.
- Boys and girls are equally likely to be abused or neglected.
<>
Want to know something else? These statistics are under reported. These are only the cases that get to the police. What about the countless children, who are either too scared to tell or too ignorant to know what just happened to them? Studies say that the results could easily be 2 times this much!
<>
So, Mr. Anonymous, if you have a concern about child abuse, then we think it’s worth examining. Don’t you?
<>So what do you do as a parent, to help prevent abuse from happening to your child, and what can you as a parent do to help protect you child from child abusers? Well, here are a few important tips you can use to keep your child safer from abusers:
Educate Your Child: Child abuse professionals state that one of the key things child predators do before abusing a child sexually, is to play on a child’s ignorance and trust. They constantly test to see what a child will and will not let them do. Then, before you know it, a child becomes a victim.
From an early age, you need to teach your child about abuse. Your child needs to know what is considered proper or improper touching. Your child needs to know that if someone hits them or touches them incorrectly, they need to inform you right away.
Buy videos go to workshops; do whatever it takes to let your child know that abuse is not okay. By educating your child, you are empowering your child and letting them know what’s appropriate. You are giving them the strength to stop or prevent child abuse from happening to them.
Listen To Your Child: This one is huge. Many times children give us clues about the things that happen to them throughout their day. Most of the time, they just flat-out tell us. But if we don’t listen, how will we know?
Keeping an open conversation with your child and being involved is one of the most important ways you can assure that your child is safe.
<>Play it Safe Or You’ll Be Sorry: So you have a sneaky suspision that your child may be getting abused. You want to act, but, then again you may just be being paranoid. What should you do?
<>Ever heard of the term “follow your gut”? Well, when it comes to your child, its better safe than sorry.
<>Tell me this. Who knows your child better than you? Who will be able to tell a change in your child, or if there is something wrong with your child better than you, the parent? If your gut tells you that there’s something wrong, we say follow the hunch.
<>Now, we’re not saying that you should act on your gut alone. But if you feel there is something wrong with your child, you should begin to take steps to confirm it right away. Take them to the doctor.
<> Buy a nanny cam. Following your intuition to protect your child is not being paranoid at all. That’s just old fashioned good parenting. And in today’s fast paced world, there needs to be more of it.
<>Learn to Recognize The Signs: Is your child acting differently? Are you noticing funny or even disturbing behavior? Are there marks on your child that you could have sworn weren’t there before? These all could be signs of abuse.
Invest in Your Childs Safety: Today we acknowledge that child abuse is an issue, and to most parent’s it’s one of our biggest nightmares. We all want to know that our child is safe when we are out and about in the world.
We invest in our child’s looks (clothes, haircusts), their pleasures (candy, toys), and even their education. But, how many of us parents really, and we mean really invest in our childrens safety?
Your average nanny cam is less than a Playstation 2, and will keep you informed of your child’s safety for years to come. And if you’re a parent, especially a parent who goes out, these are things you need to have in your child’s safety.
